Wheeler Geologic Area
Extraordinary spiral rock formations that create an other-worldly landscape located about 24 miles off of Hwy 149 at Wagon Wheel Gap between South Fork and Creede. 4×4 driving; allow a full day. Check with the Forest Service at the Creede Ranger Station (located on Main Street) for maps and more information.
American Basin & the Alpine Loop
This beautiful alpine valley carved by glaciers is a glorious backdrop for an array of blooming wildflowers every July and August. Near Lake City.
Crystal Lake
2 ½ mile scenic primitive road that leads to Crystal Lake. Take Hwy 149 27 miles from Creede, turn off onto Forest Service Road 532 and drive about 9 ½ miles.
Stoney Pass to Silverton
This full-day trip takes you above the Rio Grande Reservoir, through Brewster Park and Pole Creede, over Stoney Pass and into Silverton. Take a slight detour to visit historic Bear Town, an old mining camp, and catch great views of the Rio Grande Pyramid.
Rat Creek, Willow Creek Road
Climb Bachelor Road to Windy Gulch and take the Rat Creek/Willow Creek 4×4 road. Follow the Rat Creek drainage to the top of San Luis Pass. Breath-taking views from the Continental Divide area. Descend down West Willow back to town.
Great Sand Dunes National Park
North America’s tallest dunes rise over 750 feet against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the north east part of the San Luis Valley. Enjoy nature walks, geology, history and wildlife programs, hiking, and simply exploring the dunes. www.nps.gov/grsa

Saguache County, La Garita Natural Arch
A hidden treasure located in Penitente Canyon, only a few minutes outside of La Garita. It is a great destination for picnicking, hiking, biking, and world class rock climbing. Other local sights nearby are the Wagon Tracks, which were worn into the rock’s face by the pioneers carrying timber down from the mountains. Located north of Monte Vista on Hwy 285 – 18 miles. Turn left on Road G and travel west to the “y.” Follow signs to the arch.
